چکیده

The compositions of the volatile leaf oils of Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii and var. glauca and their hybrids were examined and utilized to examine multi-variate methods for the detection of hybridization. The first cross (coastal parent 226 x inland parent 267) produced four hybrids whose oils were much like the inland (var. glauca) parent, and 6 hybrids with composition more intermediate between the parents. Eleven of the terpenes were generally intermediate in the hybrids, whereas the other 15 terpenes were transgressive. Truncation of the terpene values to those of the maximum or minimum value of the parents improved PCO ordination using character weights of Fs from ANOVA. A second set of hybrids between coastal parent 517 x intermediate parent 521 yielded similar kinds of variation in the terpenes of the hybrids. Only 2 compounds were intermediate between parents whereas 8 terpenoids showed dominance with values like one of the parents. Nine of the terpenes and percent oil yield were transgressive to both parents. Using F weighting and truncation of transgressives, improved the ordination separating parents from hybrids. However, again, the hybrids were ordinated in two groups. Selecting a balanced set of discriminating terpenes, aided in ordination. In a study of natural field hybridization, the terpenes should be useful to classify the hybrids, but it may be difficult to accurately classify back-crossed or F2 individuals. Patterns of conifer tree regeneration following an autumn wildfire event in the western Oregon Cascade Range, USA

We investigated the effect of fire severity and environmental conditions on conifer tree regeneration 11 years after an autumn wildfire in the western Oregon Cascade Range. Conifer tree seedlings, including those of Pseudotsuga menziesii, established promptly and at high densities following fire, in contrast to long establishment periods documented for many other sites. P. menziesii, Tsuga hete...

Inheritance of RAPD marker in female grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), male bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and their F1 hybrids

Genetic variation and inheritance of randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers in female grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and male bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and their F1 offspring hybrid have been studied. For this purpose, genomic DNA was extracted from muscle tissue according to phenol-chloroform method, and six decamer primers were used for amplifying polymorphic ...

Some effects of douglas fir terpenes on certain microorganisms.

The Douglas fir terpene alpha-pinene was shown to inhibit the growth of a variety of bacteria and a yeast. Other terpenes of the Douglas fir, including limonene, camphene, and isobornyl acetate, were also inhibitory to Bacillus thuringiensis. All terpenes were inhibitory at concentrations normally present in the fir needle diet of Douglas fir tussock moth larvae. The presence of such terpenes i...

Intervarietal and intravarietal genetic structure in Douglas-fir: nuclear SSRs bring novel insights into past population demographic processes, phylogeography, and intervarietal hybridization

Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is one of numerous wide-range forest tree species represented by subspecies/varieties, which hybridize in contact zones. This study examined the genetic structure of this North American conifer and its two hybridizing varieties, coastal and Rocky Mountain, at intervarietal and intravarietal level. The genetic structure was subsequently associated with the Ple...

Occurrence and dominance of six Pacific Northwest conifer species

Questions: Can probability of occurrence and dominance be accurately estimated for six important conifer species with varying range sizes? Does range size impact the accuracy of species probability of occurrence models? Is species predicted probability of occurrence significantly related to observed dominance? Location: Pacific Northwest region, North America (601–401N, 1401–1101W). Methods: Th...
